Anti-Immigration Protest Marks PM Modi’s Melbourne Visit

Melbourne, Australia: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Melbourne drew attention not only for the massive reception from the Indian diaspora but also for protests led by anti-immigration activists opposing Indian migration to Australia.

According to reports, an anti-immigration group staged a demonstration during the “Melbourne Meets Modi” community event at Marvel Stadium, where thousands of Indian-Australians had gathered to welcome the Indian Prime Minister. The protesters raised slogans against immigration, calling for stricter migration policies in Australia.

In a separate incident, a far-right activist reportedly breached security at the hotel where Prime Minister Modi was staying and shouted anti-Indian slogans before being removed by authorities. The same individual later attempted to disrupt the public event but was drowned out by cheering supporters and music.

Apart from the anti-immigration demonstration, several human rights organizations and members of Australia’s Sikh and Muslim communities also held peaceful protests, urging Australian leaders to raise concerns about human rights issues during bilateral discussions with India.

Despite the protests, the visit focused on strengthening India-Australia strategic, economic and trade relations. Prime Minister Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed a large gathering of the Indian diaspora, highlighting growing cooperation in areas including technology, defence, education and investment.

Australian authorities maintained tight security throughout the visit, and the official engagements concluded without any major disruptions.
