Death Toll in Bangkok Bar Fire Rises to 30; Probe Reveals Major Safety Lapses

Bangkok: The death toll from the devastating fire at a popular music bar in Thailand’s capital has risen to 30, with dozens of others still receiving treatment in hospitals, including several in critical condition. The tragedy has become Bangkok’s deadliest entertainment venue fire in nearly two decades.

Investigators examining the blaze at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao bar have uncovered a series of serious safety violations that may have contributed to the high number of casualties. Preliminary findings indicate that emergency exits were obstructed or inaccessible, the venue contained highly flammable decorative materials, and poor ventilation allowed thick, toxic smoke to spread rapidly through the building. Many victims reportedly became trapped while attempting to escape through windowless bathrooms.

Authorities believe the fire may have originated from an electrical short circuit in a ceiling-mounted air conditioning unit before rapidly engulfing the single-storey venue. Witnesses described hearing an explosion followed by an intense burst of flames that left patrons with little time to escape.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has ordered stricter inspections of entertainment venues across the city and announced plans to strengthen fire safety regulations. Police are investigating possible negligence and whether the establishment complied with mandatory safety standards. The bar’s management has expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged full cooperation with the investigation.

The tragedy has renewed concerns over fire safety enforcement in Thailand, with experts calling for tougher regulations, regular inspections and stricter penalties for venues that fail to maintain adequate emergency exits and fire protection systems. Authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the blaze while identifying all the victims and supporting affected families.
