Five Killed in Mass Shooting at German Youth Welfare Centre; Two Suspects Arrested

Stade (Germany) : Five people were killed and several others injured in a mass shooting at a youth welfare centre in the northern German city of Stade on Monday, prompting a massive police response and marking one of the country’s deadliest shooting incidents in recent years.

Police confirmed that the attack took place at a youth welfare facility in Stade, located about 50 kilometres west of Hamburg. Authorities said five victims died from gunshot wounds, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Following the attack, police arrested the suspected gunman along with a second individual believed to have been involved. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the motive and the exact sequence of events.

“There is no longer any danger to the public,” police said after securing the area, while assuring residents that the situation was under control.

A large-scale emergency operation was launched immediately after the shooting, with heavily armed police officers, ambulances and rescue personnel deployed across the area. Local media footage showed emergency vehicles lining the streets near the facility as helicopters circled overhead.

Earlier, police had urged residents to avoid the area and allow emergency services to carry out their operations without obstruction.

Germany maintains some of Europe’s strictest firearm regulations, including mandatory psychiatric evaluations for gun licence applicants under the age of 25. As a result, mass shootings remain relatively rare, though the country has witnessed several deadly incidents in recent years.

Among the most notable attacks was the 2020 mass shooting in Hanau, where a far-right extremist killed nine people before taking his own life. In 2023, a former member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses fatally shot six people at a congregation hall in Hamburg before dying by suicide. In another incident in 2022, a gunman opened fire at a secondary school in northern Germany, seriously injuring a staff member before being arrested.

Monday’s shooting has once again raised concerns over public safety despite Germany’s stringent gun control laws. Authorities have launched a full investigation, and further details are expected as forensic examinations and witness interviews continue.
