London : The Indian Men’s Hockey Team suffered a heartbreaking 1-4 shootout defeat against hosts England after a thrilling 2-2 draw in regulation time during the FIH Pro League European tour at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Thursday.
Forward Dilpreet Singh starred for India with a brilliant brace, scoring in the 10th and 58th minutes, but his efforts were ultimately overshadowed as England held their nerve in the shootout to claim the bonus point.
England’s David Goodfield equalised in the 29th minute before Nicholas Bandurak put the hosts ahead with just four minutes remaining. However, India responded almost immediately as Dilpreet struck again to force the match into a shootout.
The opening quarter saw both teams create opportunities through penalty corners. India came closest first when captain Harmanpreet Singh’s drag-flick was saved by England goalkeeper James Mazarelo. At the other end, the Indian defence successfully denied Bandurak from England’s first penalty corner.
India broke the deadlock in the 10th minute after Mandeep Singh produced an excellent run along the baseline before setting up Dilpreet Singh, who dived forward to guide the ball into the net.
The visitors continued to attack in the second quarter and nearly doubled their lead through a penalty corner, but England defender Thomas Sorsby produced a crucial goal-line save to deny Amandeep Lakra’s drag-flick.
England restored parity just before halftime when David Goodfield capitalised on a loose ball inside the circle and fired a powerful volley past the Indian goalkeeper.
The third quarter remained evenly contested, with both teams defending resolutely despite creating several scoring opportunities.
England dominated possession in the final quarter and finally took the lead in the 56th minute when Nicholas Bandurak converted a low drag-flick from a penalty corner.
India, however, refused to surrender. Just two minutes later, Sumit made a determined run into the circle before delivering a precise pass to Dilpreet Singh, who fired a powerful shot through the goalkeeper’s legs to level the scores at 2-2 and send the contest into a shootout.
England proved more clinical in the tie-breaker. Thomas Sorsby and James Albery successfully converted the opening attempts, while captain Zachary Wallace added two more goals, including one from a penalty stroke. Harmanpreet Singh was the only Indian player to score in the shootout as England secured a 4-1 victory.
Despite the defeat, India displayed resilience and fighting spirit, recovering from a late deficit to force the shootout. However, England’s superior execution in the tie-breaker earned the hosts the valuable bonus point in the FIH Pro League standings.
