Peshawar: At least 11 people were killed after the roof of a mud-brick house collapsed during heavy monsoon rains in northwest Pakistan, officials said on Tuesday, as severe weather continued to batter several parts of the country.
The tragic incident occurred in Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where rescue teams recovered the bodies of the victims from the debris. Authorities said most of those killed were women and children who were inside the house when the roof gave way.
Emergency response personnel rushed to the scene and carried out rescue operations before handing over the victims’ bodies to their families. Officials said the heavy rainfall had weakened the structure, leading to the fatal collapse.
The same spell of unseasonal heavy rain also triggered landslides in Pakistan’s northern Gilgit-Baltistan region, blocking roads, damaging homes and disrupting transportation. Authorities have advised residents and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel in mountainous areas due to the continued risk of flash floods and landslides.
Pakistan experiences destructive monsoon rains every year, with flooding, landslides and building collapses claiming dozens of lives during the rainy season. Disaster management authorities have urged people living in vulnerable areas to remain alert as more rainfall is forecast in the coming days.
