Washington/Tehran: The United States military has carried out fresh “self-defense” strikes on Iranian targets, including boats and missile-related sites in southern Iran, according to multiple official and media reports, amid a fragile ceasefire in the ongoing conflict.
The strikes were confirmed by the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which said the operations targeted Iranian boats allegedly preparing to lay mines and missile launch sites that posed a threat to American forces operating in the region.
CENTCOM described the actions as defensive measures taken to protect US personnel and maintain freedom of navigation in key waterways, including the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Iran, however, strongly condemned the strikes, calling them a violation of the ceasefire agreement and warning of possible retaliation. Iranian officials said the attacks struck areas near key military installations in southern provinces, including Hormozgan, and resulted in explosions reported in coastal regions.
Context of Rising Tensions
The latest strikes come during ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran following months of conflict that began earlier in the year, involving US and allied operations against Iranian military infrastructure.
Despite a declared ceasefire, both sides have accused each other of violations. Iran has repeatedly stated that it retains the right to respond to any perceived aggression, while US officials have maintained that their actions are limited to defensive operations.
The situation remains highly unstable, with diplomatic negotiations reportedly continuing in parallel through intermediaries aimed at preventing further escalation and reopening critical maritime trade routes.
Strategic Importance of Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit chokepoints, has been central to the tensions. Any disruption in the area has immediate effects on global energy prices and shipping security.
Recent hostilities and maritime threats have already led to increased shipping costs and rerouting of commercial vessels, adding pressure on global supply chains.
Diplomatic Uncertainty
While US officials have expressed cautious optimism about ongoing diplomatic talks, Iranian leaders have signaled that any future agreement depends on what they describe as “respect for sovereignty and security guarantees.”
At present, there is no confirmed breakdown of the ceasefire, but repeated incidents on both sides have raised concerns that the agreement remains unstable and could collapse if hostilities continue.
