United Nations – Major Abhilasha Barak of the Indian Army has been selected to receive the United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award for 2025, marking a significant recognition of India’s contribution to advancing gender equality in peacekeeping operations.
The award, presented annually by the United Nations, honours military personnel who have made outstanding efforts to integrate a gender perspective into peacekeeping work and improve conditions for women in conflict zones. Major Barak is being recognised for her exemplary service, leadership, and commitment to strengthening the role of women in peace and security missions.
According to defence sources, Major Barak’s work in UN peacekeeping operations focused on community engagement, protection of vulnerable groups, and promoting inclusive participation in post-conflict recovery efforts. Her initiatives were widely appreciated for building trust between local populations and peacekeeping forces.
The Indian Army welcomed the announcement, stating that the recognition reflects the growing role of women officers in international missions and India’s continued support for UN peacekeeping efforts. Officials noted that Indian women officers have increasingly taken on key responsibilities in global operations, contributing to both operational effectiveness and humanitarian outreach.
The United Nations highlighted that this year’s selection underscores the importance of gender-responsive peacekeeping, especially in regions affected by ongoing conflict and instability. The award aims to encourage armed forces worldwide to adopt inclusive practices and ensure that peacekeeping missions address the needs of all segments of society.
Major Barak’s recognition is expected to be formally conferred at a UN ceremony later this year, bringing further attention to India’s participation in global peacekeeping initiatives and the expanding leadership roles of women in the armed forces.
