Pakistan – Islamabad : Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, has moved the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against what she described as her brother’s alleged solitary confinement, local media reported on Friday.
According to the petition filed by Aleema Khan, the detention conditions imposed on Imran Khan are unlawful and not supported by any judicial order, Geo News reported. The plea argues that keeping the former prime minister in solitary confinement is illegal and violates constitutional protections.
Imran Khan, 73, has been in prison since August 2023 following convictions that his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has consistently termed politically motivated. Since his removal from office in 2022 through a no-confidence vote, he has faced multiple legal cases, including allegations related to state gifts and an unlawful marriage case.
The petition further states that no court has ordered solitary confinement for Imran Khan and alleges that his lawyers are being denied access for legal consultation and documentation, including signing power of attorney papers.
Aleema Khan has requested the High Court to declare the alleged solitary confinement and incommunicado detention of Imran Khan “illegal, unlawful and without lawful authority.” The petition also claims violations of Articles 9 and 14 of Pakistan’s Constitution, which guarantee personal liberty and dignity, Geo News reported.
Concerns over Imran Khan’s detention conditions have been repeatedly raised by his sisters and PTI leaders, who have alleged worsening health conditions and restricted access to medical care and family visits. However, Pakistani federal authorities and jail officials have rejected these claims.
The family has also demanded that Imran Khan be shifted to a hospital for proper medical treatment and diagnostic evaluation under the supervision of doctors and family members.
On Tuesday, Imran Khan’s sisters and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi were once again denied permission to meet him at Adiala Jail, further escalating tensions.
Speaking to reporters, Aleema Khan said the denial of meetings despite Islamabad High Court’s directions permitting family visits twice a week amounted to contempt of court. She also urged supporters and party members to increase pressure to ensure proper medical care for the PTI founder.
“Imran Khan is not only our brother but also the leader of PTI… everyone will have to show courage. This is a difficult time, and we are doing whatever we can,” she said.
