Russian Air Defence Effective but Needs Modernisation Against Ukrainian Drones: Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has acknowledged that while Russia’s air defence system remains effective, it requires further modernization and strengthening to counter increasingly sophisticated Ukrainian drone attacks that have penetrated deep into Russian territory.

Speaking during a meeting with international media representatives on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin admitted that some Ukrainian drones have managed to bypass Russian defences and strike targets, including in his hometown of St. Petersburg. He emphasized that Moscow would take additional measures to enhance its aerial protection capabilities.

“Russia has an air defence system; we need to improve it, strengthen it, and we will do that,” Putin said, while acknowledging that certain drone attacks had successfully broken through existing defensive layers.

His remarks come after a series of Ukrainian drone strikes targeted strategic facilities inside Russia, including an oil terminal and a naval base near St. Petersburg. The attacks disrupted air traffic, triggered security alerts, and highlighted Ukraine’s growing ability to conduct long-range operations far from the frontline.

Recent Ukrainian operations have also reportedly targeted military infrastructure in Crimea and other Russian-controlled areas, exposing vulnerabilities in Russia’s air defence network despite extensive deployment of anti-aircraft systems.

Military analysts say the rapid evolution of drone warfare has forced both Russia and Ukraine to adapt their defence strategies. The increasing use of advanced drones, including faster and more difficult-to-intercept models, has created new challenges for conventional air defence systems.

Putin’s comments underscore growing concern within Russia over the effectiveness of existing defences as Ukraine continues to expand its drone campaign against military, energy, and logistical targets. The Kremlin has indicated that strengthening air defence capabilities will remain a priority as the conflict enters another year.
